Concert Cello in Bigleaf Maple
Our Concert Cello in Big Leaf Maple version features back and sides of premium Pacific Northwest Bigleaf Maple and a select European Spruce top. This tonewood choice gives a sweet clarity with a full dynamic range. Big Leaf Maple is prized for its lightness, resonance and fine grain patterns. Our wood stock of big leaf is uniquely flamed and featured, the depth and beauty highlighted by our hand rubbed varnish.
Our 4/4 cello is patterned on a larger historic Montegnana instrument. As with all Upton instruments, ergonomics are optimized to give the instrument a very comfortable and natural feel. All of our cellos are built from the finest seasoned wood stock and hand built over an interior frame in the Italian method.
Why is a world renowned and internationally awarded double bass maker building cellos?
The cello and the double bass share such common musical ground. Just name a classical bassist that hasn’t worked on the Bach Cello Suites. The second lowest string of the cello is literally that of the double basses highest string, and the cellos lowest string (C) drills down into the first position of a double bass players A string. Upton Bass has spent years perfecting the balance, clarity, and presence of these string frequencies and how they react with the player and the instrument. It’s very exciting to apply our knowledge to the beautiful tonal palette of the cello.
