Ever since, we’ve challenged ourselves to build the best basses at any price point – driven by tone, feel, innovation and the feedback of some of the finest musicians in the world. Buying a new double bass is a very special process which Upton Bass String Instrument Company is honored to help you with. Whether your music genre calls for upright bass, string bass, bass fiddle, contrabass, bass viol, or double bass, you’ll need to buy a double bass with exceptional tone, playability, and power.
When shopping for a double bass there are several factors to consider – size, playability, manufacturer, beauty, and the dealer. At Upton Bass, it’s not that complicated. The three most important factors are quality, budget and who actually makes the bass! Unfortunately, most American brands have their instruments made overseas and just add the finishing touches. At Upton Bass our basses are actually completely made in our Mystic Connecticut workshop by our team (with the exception of what’s made of metal). We encourage you to research our company and read the bass reviews on our website. Check out some recent bass builds to get ideas! Upton Bass is bass player owned and operated.
As with any instrument, you should buy the best double bass you can afford. The better the instrument sounds, the more you’ll be inclined to play it. A truly great custom instrument can give your imagination the right voice while falling into your hands with inspiring response. We guarantee that you won’t find a better double bass or company to deal with in the market. We strive for quality without compromise – we don’t want to be your first call, but rather your last.

Every UB brand double bass is handmade in the Italian tradition of instrument making at our Mystic, Connecticut workshop by our staff of skilled luthiers. UB instruments are made from our own private holdings of tone woods which we have selected from around the world. At any given time Upton Bass String Instrument Co. has quantities of tone woods that would allow for the making of over two thousand instruments. This stock has been built over many years, and we continue to procure for future use both green and lofted lots that meet our rigorous quality standards.
All UB basses feature the same top quality UB components which have made our instruments renowned world wide, including “A grade” Ebony fingerboard, tailpiece, nut and saddle. Fine French bridges, durable German endpins, and individual style Rubner tuners. All instruments are made per order and hand-varnished using centuries old proven ingredients and techniques.
Our double bass upgrades have all been refined to help the modern bass player with a fresh perspective. All of our double basses can be customized in many ways – 5 string bass, left handed bass, Eb bass necks, C Extensions, tuner upgrades, angled bass endpins – Vance or Rabbath style, or our patented removable/adjustable bass neck system. Customer Testimonials:
Jack, Chris, and I know there are others who I saw but didn’t meet ( too busy working!) including Gary,
This note has been a long time coming.
I’d like you all to know what a great experience it was doing business with you. From the process of selecting the options for my Upton bass to the utter efficiency in dealing with my consignments (I was stunned how quickly you moved those!), it just made the whole process, start to finish, a pleasure. I haven’t been in every luthier’s shop in New England, just a few, but have never felt more comfortable than I did during my four or five visits to Upton. (Believe me, this is important to players, such as myself, who are self taught and self conscious) ‘nough said!
The bass? Why didn’t I do this a long time ago? It has surpassed my expectations and I can feel it breaking in, opening up as you say, so it’s only getting better. Love picking it up at home. The neck feels so comfortable and my access to upper range is easier than any of my other basses. The break angle at the heel of the neck (terminology?) is very sure, not sharp. I know when I hit that position right where I am. Kind of a new experience for me! My performances are always “plugged” and the first time I set up at a venue that I play every week I was amazed at the volume, tone and clarity before feedback. When I met with Jack recently he thought the Rev pickup might be a little too snug, but we decided not to touch it. Uh oh, something’s very right!
I had a moment to thank Chris for his varnish work. It’s just beautiful! Not too dark, as I asked, and the texture of the grain of the carved top ( how do you do that? ) and the aged tuners give it a refinement that I, for one, really appreciate.
Congratulations to you all! You’re changing for the better the way a luthier shop is conceived and operated, thank you.
Sincerely,
Paul Justice
Dear Upton Bass,
Received my Upton Laminated on Mar 14, 2016; let me tell you, the look, feel and attention to detail on this instrument is nothing short of stellar for the price point. Eric and Jack answered every concern and were truly generous in sending teaser pics. Shipping process was thoroughly explained and the “Da-la-Ville” bag turned out to be a perfect add-on. I unpacked the beauty and played daily. Once I got my hand strength back, the first gig on it was unbelievable; sound was rich, full and well defined. Everyone made comments that night and my gigs have definitely increased as a result.
THANK YOU for having a passion for what you do and providing a USA made, quality, (non- shiny) instrument for the masses. Wishing you and your Team continued success!
I Joseph
