We’ve always appreciated the accomplishments of Abraham Prescott and his thriving early 19th Century New England string instrument company. Separated by an ocean from the violinmaking traditions of Europe, his large resonant basses built of native old-growth Sugar Maple have inspired classical and jazz bassists to this day. In this holiday season we can see…
Double Basses with a Restoration Future
Gary has pulled down some basses from the loft which need work but promise to be amazing instruments once tuned back to life! We’ve set the prices to include the full shop restoration, completely redone, down to the last cleat. The finished instruments will be tuned to precision with modern overstand and a complete setup…
Upton Double Bass Deposit
This deposit is set at the token amount of $500 for the shopper who may be sitting up late at night and decides it’s time to pull the trigger on their dream bass! (Having described said dream bass in our Instrument Inquiry Form)
Please note – the $500 amount does not reflect the amount of the first full payment required. This is a placeholder deposit and we will finalize the full order with you promptly. For any questions please contact the shop: sales@uptonbass.com or call +1 (860) 535-9399
To build your bass we require a first payment of 1/2 the instrument price. This puts you in the production line and we begin making parts for your instrument. When your instrument is headed to the workbench for assembly, we require a second payment of the other 1/2 instrument price.
The third and final payment will reflect accessories, strings, bag, etc. plus tax and shipping, and is taken before final shipment or delivery.
For example, your dream bass costs $8000: The first deposit will be $4000 (minus $500 if you’ve bought a placeholder deposit here), the second payment will be $4000, and the third will be the price of strings, extras, tax and shipping where applicable.
These direct payments allow us to offer straight-from-the-factory pricing! In a regular retail setting our American-built basses might cost twice as much.

Compact 1938 Otto Rubner double bass, sloped shoulders, great German Maple and build quality. Nice instrument on smaller side, would make an excellent tough and compact conservatory companion.

[gallery columns="1" size="large" ids="162931"]Upton Prescott 4/4 Opus 150, The Tiny Martin Prescott
This new Upton double bass is a direct tracing from the Tiny Martin Prescott, a fully-sized Abraham Prescott bass, perhaps one of the last built in the 1840s. That Prescott enjoyed a decades-long career filling Boston Symphony Hall under the bow of Leslie “Tiny” Martin. It exemplifies how a simple ingenious New England double bass…
Upton Santagiuliana Double Bass Opus 239
Another Santagiuliana double bass build! This pattern is becoming a favorite with its early-era Italian long and broad upper bout. Gary selected some of our most breathtaking figured maple for O239, which seems to go on forever throughout the canted back and wide ribs. Just strung with Gary’s Blended set of clear low and flexible…
A Piece of Kay Bass History and Kay Bass Future?
Gary shows off this piece of American bassmaking history in this new video! This form is a piece of Kay Bass history – it was used to build most of the deluxe Kays, blonde S-7s and S-9s. Perhaps your Kay was built on it? If the thought of a new Upton Kay double bass interests…
